Straddling the top of the world, I backpacked 103 miles on foot in pursuit of one of the world’s most elusive animals.
For millennia, snow leopards have roamed Central Asia’s most forbidding terrain. Here thin air, deep snow, and subfreezing temperatures have allowed these cats to elude the human gaze and disappear into the landscape like phantoms. At an altitude where planes are required to be pressurized, I set out to find these elusive cats.
